I agree with Biff - I saw a place in Annecy a couple of weeks ago and drooled over the guttering and downpipes (sad sod that I am - and I also stocked up on chevilettes at their local ironmonger!).
It may even be worth sourcing the stuff in France. Let me know if you do, because my brother-in-law is a builder working over there and may be capable of being persuaded to get it and ship it.
Copper prices have gone through the roof in the past year, though, thanks to the Chinese electrifying everything in sight. Ask any sparks or plumber.

In autumn 2001 copper was around $1500 per tonne, now it is around $7500.

Check the price with the supplier - don't rely on a printed price list a few moths old. Galvanised steel is the standard in France and much of the Continent and an excellent alternative to standard issue British plastic. It is available from Jewsons et al., imported from Sweden.
There is also seamless aluminium guttering

Another problem with metal guttering is the fitting.
Looking at some of the plastic cobbled-togethers called guttering fitted by "professionals" I dread to think what some builders would produce.

I do have a bit of French at my disposal, but the nearest I can come up with is une cheville which is a wall-plug. I wonder if it's anything to do with this?

It's a hold-fast - similar to ones that carpenters and blacksmiths have used for centuries, but smaller. If you're working on stonework and want to hold some timber against an edge for plastering or to make levels, a chevilette will hold it in a trice with no drilling or screwing - just knock it in like a nail and push the moveable head down onto the wood.
I don't know how or why the English building trade has forgotten how to use them (for there were certainly used in the past).
Most French builders' merchants will sell them for about 5 Euros a piece.
