Does anybody have or has used a bateau-style copper bath and if so - what are they like to bathe in? Like - do they stay warm, are they comfortable? Thanks!!
If I remember my schoolboy science correctly, I think copper is more thermally conductive than iron, steel or plastic*. So I reckon your bath would probably be likely to lose its heat quicker than one made of any of those materials.
Whether this would be a problem for you depends on how long you like to lie there and soak!
As regards comfort, I don't imagine it would feel much different from lying in any type of metal bath.
*I'm always a bit nervous saying things like that, because there are so many contributors to this forum who are much more technically knowledgeable than I am!
Quite right, David, copper is one of the best conductors of heat. Aluminium is slightly better and silver and gold better still if you are looking for a cold bath. If you want a warm bath, steel is a worse conductor than iron and marble will keep you even warmer. Acrylic resin will lose heat at less than a tenth the rate of marble and 2000 times more slowly than copper. If you want a long soak in hot water plastic is the best.
Good grief man, you're showing your age!
Wasn't the Mekon carried around on some sort of upturned bath? Or maybe it was the chieftain in the Asterix books. Talking of which, France is the only place where I've sploshed in a copper bath, and very nice it was too. This one had a tarnished copper interior, and the exterior was painted a sort of pea-green.
I can't recall if it seemed to cool too quickly for comfort, but it was a jolly handsome thing.
The warmest, cosyest, strongest, softest bath I ever had, was a stone troth filled with well water and left in the sun for 3 hours.
I was 6 yrs old and my grandmother ( bless her !! ) put me in one of these, it felt so lovely untill she decided to get her clothes off and join in , I went in a state of stupor and confusion , I shot out of the troth an promptly fell in a pile of pigs S**T.
Copper is very thermally conductive but the metal to air interface would be where thermal resistance is highest, so it may not be much worse than cast iron. Topping up with more hot is to be expected with iron baths.
How thick is this copper? Its not exactly a tough metal. Solid copper or plated?
My cast iron bath, although shabby, is wonderful - keeps the water hot for ages!
Much longer than the placcy bath we used to have in a previous home. That was an expensive thick one and it was fine but the cast iron certainly dosen't allow the water to cool as quickly as people suggest!
Tin baths now - they didn't keep the water very hot.
I manage to show my age in everything I do - particularly looking in the mirror.
Yes, the Mekon was the Treen equivalent of Tony Blair, and he was carried about on a wonderful little anti-gravity boat. I seem to remember that Dan Dare and Digby captured him at one point, but when they realised that this left a Treen John Prescott in command of the planet, they released him hurriedly.
Oooh - you've got me on the Zondar question. I don't remember him. The Treens had fierce pets called Zoms - could that be what you're thinking of?
I can't remember whether they were from Mars or Venus - I suspect the latter. Can you remember?
I always took you for a young 'un, but I'm starting to wonder..!
No there was definately one good treen. He popped up unexpectedly having stowed away on the ship with Dan Dare and Digby at the controls. He popped up behind them and Digby, not recognising him said "It's a green...a treen". End of episode. The following picture, a week later, opened with Dan Dare looking round and saying "It's Zondar"
