cooker hoods (chimney flued)

Hi folks, I am siting a gas/electric cooker in a hearth. The chimney is flued (class 2 liner with a brewer cowel). I need to pop a cooker hood in there (one of the ones that I can place slightly higher up the chimney and out of sight- so it doesn't have to be pretty). Would an integrated one work OK?

Anyone got any ideas/experience as to the best brands/the best place that I should look?

Also, as it is going up the chimney do I need to get one with a particular 'sucking' power? What about building regs?

I'm afraid I don't have any answers, we also have put an duel fuel cooker in our hearth, we have an electric fan above ours. We don't however have a flue liner installed yet and as a result we have a constant supply of soot on our cooker! . Was your flue liner already there or did you put it in yourself? if the latter can you tell me where you got it from and if you installed it or had someone to do it for you?

Well, this is purely wild guesswork, but the only potential problem I can conceive of is the possible future reversion of the chimney flue to use with hot gases.

Cooking effluvia that pass through an extraction system do contain a certain amount of oils and fats. Even if you're conscientious about changing the filter regularly, I suspect that a small propertion of these will pass through the filter. They could then cool and condense within the the flue, building up over the years to coat it with a greasy residue.

If, at a later date, the flue was converted back to use with a boiler or fire of any kind, this grease could be combustible.

As I said, this may be wild surmise, but it bears consideration.

I unblocked a fireplace in my kitchen and put in a duel fuel range cooker 2 years ago. Like you, I was in a bit of a dilemma as to what cooker hood to put in - I had an odd shape to contend with. So in the end I built in 2 electric switches - one for down lights and one for cooker hood - and just put lights in at first over the hob and saw how it went. Actually, it was fine and I never did bother getting a cooker hood (noisy horrible things anyway, not to mention expensive). I find that the draw from the chimney gets all the steam, etc out and I don't get cooking smells at all. I get a bit of soot on the hob after a storm and the odd crispy fried wood lice/daddy long legs that drop in the pan, but that's about it. I got the chimney sweep in and then got the builder to cap the chimney in such a way that it vents but keeps the birds out as we found about 25 jackdaws when we unblocked it.
