Converting a Listed Bedroom to a Bathroom

My house needs another bathroom upstairs. It is however grade 2 listed.
I'd like to convert a smallish upstairs bedroom into a bathroom. Can listed planning consent be granted for this?

Has anyone any advice or experience of doing this in the past?
Any advice would be most helpful

I converted a first floor bedroom into a bathroom. Listed building consent was no problem. I kept all the original features in the conversion except for some of the floorboards. The waste and soil pipes come out at the back of the house which is not seen from the road. I suggest you have a word with your local planning department.

I have obtained LBC for various works that included some internal layout alterations, including relocation of a kitchen, so such things are certainly possible. However, as with all changes to listed buildings, each case will be different and treated individually by the relevant conservation officer. I'd suggest that the best course of action is to contact your CO and discuss your proposed changes with them and ask how best to proceed.

If there are no structural changes to the property and no disruption of the original fabric (except a few small holes for pipework) then it may be the case that LBC is not required, but the CO is the only person who can give a definitive answer to your questions.

I have also installed bathrooms in several of my listed houses in the past. As others have said above, it's unlikely that you'll have problems getting consent, provided you're not damaging original fabric (other than, as FF says, holes for pipes), or changing things like windows, walls or doors.

But there is a likelihood that you'll need Listed Building Consent, and probably Building Regs consent, too. Your best bet is to make a call or send an email to your Conservation Officer and ask for preliminary advice. If the CO wants to discuss the matter in more depth, then ask for a site meeting. You can talk through your plans in more detail and see what he/she says about LBC.
