Constructing casement windows

Hi there,

Are there any experienced carpenters out there who can offer advice? I am currently attending a city & guilds furniture making course with a view of making casement windows for our 18th century cottage which currently has very old rotten windows of a very 1980's style, yuk! I am wanting a sort of step by step carpentry book which shows construction techniques for this and also for doors.

I have seen a few on Amazon but don't know if they are any good. I thought the best advice would be from some pro's.

Not really sure what kind of advise you are looking for, I can say that you must find out how these basic of windows were constructed and their dimensions to be proportionally correct for the period with regard to glazing bars, opening casements and frames ( single glazed presumably).

The same principle applies to doors.

Charlotte I've used W B McKay's 'Joinery' in the past. This is detailed enough for windows/doors which predate soft seals and of course DG but does include capillary groves.My copy is a 2nd Ed. dated 1965. if you can't find it let me know. Ross

When I started making windows I couldn't find much useful literature. The old books, such as Hasluck Carpentry and Joinery, are fantastic but you need to serve a 50 year apprenticeship.
