My partner and I are looking to move into a period property and have found a cottage we like however we are having a disagreement on the conservatory. My partner really likes the addition but I'm not a huge fan, I think it takes away from the property rather than adding to it. I'd love to hear your thoughts, the property is listed here http://www.abbotts.co.uk/forsaleoffice/Debenham/1 We're really interested in the property and love the rest of the cottage. Would be great to hear some thoughts!

I wonder if it would be allowed if it's listed. I think conservatories are very hard to make look attractive.

Learn to love the conservatory, save enough money to replace it with a design you like better or find another property that you both like more than this one. If you buy this and remove the conservatory you will never ever be allowed to forget it :lol:

Ah, I misunderstood, sorry about that. Which house is the one you are looking at? The top one? Very good advice I have had from people who have been there and done it, is to live in a place for a while before making and big decisions, and I totally agree. Live with it for a year and see how you feel. If it is the top house I understand why you don't like the plastic roof but the floor is rather nice.

The marketing photos don't show the conservatory from the outside. Probably because its incongruous & overwhelming an otherwise charming 2-bed cottage.
Negotiate hard so you can remove it (and pay off your partner...). Or, find another property that suits your need for floorspace and yet has greater integrity.
Of course, this is just my uneducated (and rather purist) two-penneth. Every house is compromised in some way. For me, this is too much.

From the inside, it's not my thing but it *could* be made more tolerable by getting some decent shade blinds to cover the inside of that roof - they'd still let light through but would hide the expanse of plastic.
However, to borrow a word from Royalty, I suspect that it's a carbuncle on what is otherwise a very pretty cottage. If you're spending that kind of money on a place and your other half really wants a conservatory, does the budget allow for a more sympathetic replacement?
Check the listing status as well - if it's an unauthorised addition then that could just be your saviour, it would certainly be a very strong negotiating point to knock the cost of it's removal and loss of it's amenity value off the asking price.

A lot of property for not much money. So much space, and three garages <emoticon green with envy>
The ground floor has had a good old going over, floor level reduced, concrete perhaps but there will presumably be a dpc under the sole plate, and upstairs some beautiful floorboards.
I presume you're going to get a specialist 'old property' surveyor to take a look.
Nice location, so long as that field opposite doesn't get built on. Well screened from the road with what looks like a well-maintained (nitida?) hedge, and some decent trees.
The absence of exterior pics in general is surprising/sinister, but you've seen it so you know what they didn't want to show - I guess a modern extension at the back where those french windows (yuk?) are? That might bother me a lot more.
The conservatory, yes, the interior looks better than most. Remove those MFI cupboards and it could be made to look pretty good. The roof could be replaced in wood & glass at a later date.
Don't take it down, you might not get permish to replace it.

From a pure conservation perspective it's probably better to leave the thing as is until it actually needs maintenance rather than mess around even more. I have an outside covered area with a polycarbonate roof and it's one of my favourite places to sit. It looks a little incongruous from some angles but I don't see it when I'm sitting there.

I'm surprised LBC was given for a conservatory. I asked about one here, and was very quickly sorted out by my CO. We have a Garden Room which we like very much, and which is far more than a conservatory.
That said, I agree with the "try living with it for a while" approach.

Our house was listed BECAUSE the uPVC windows were installed. When I later asked the CO about it, he said the council had done a lousy job protecting period properties in the 80s/90s. Apparently, they panicked when they saw the plastic windows going in and got it listed.
