common practice, bad build or added later?

After removing some plaster (i say removing... it almost removed itself :roll: )
I discovered that an internal wall does not tie into the exterior wall.

Is this common practice, bad build or typical of a wall added at a later date ?

How old is the building? I visted a building today that had some ties which was strange! It was built as a U boat detection unit for WW1.

my interior wall isnt tied in , a partition clay lump wall within a clay lump lean-to.
the exterior wall has recently moved , outwards :shock: and i can get my hand in-between it and the partition wall.
i just pretended i didn't see it as it was the end of a long , messy week end so i will inspect it properly next time i am up there.

Its the same in our house, stone exterior walls with a brick interior wall/fireplace which isn't tied in, house dates to early 1700's, brick interior is presumed to have been added at a later date.

It would not suprise me put it that way
Not much BC in them days
Depended on the quality of the builder cost etc etc

Our house-before-last had a huge extension added sometime early in the C19th - it more than doubled the size of the original house.
We discovered that nothing had been tied in when we had to remove a drainpipe from one side, and were most impressed to see that the courses of bricks were still perfectly lined up. Nothing appeared to have shifted by so much as a millimetre.
So I wouldn't worry if I were you. Unless, that is, there are signs of on-going movement.

Given the general lack of deep, solid foundations in older properties, I wonder if not tying-in is actually good practice? If a big, heavy wall on poor foundations is tied into an existing building, is there not a risk of the new wall pulling the old building apart as it settles into the ground? better, perhaps, to just butt the new wall against the old and then fill any cracks that might appear with lime mortar.

Pure conjecture though.

Common practice? Pick any building technique and you can be sure that it will have been used in any variety you can think of - plus a few that you would never have considered possible.

So yes, it's undoubtedly common practice. But that doesn't mean it's correct practice.

I'm sure that Flyfisher's conjecture is correct for certain situations in certain types of building. But - as the old saying goes - circumstances alter cases.
