Hi - I've removed hideous cement pointing from roughstone wall (circa 1840s). The original mortar is a nice red colour - presumably from locally sourced sandstone. Any advice on what material is best for re-pointing? Options seem to be a coloured ready-mixed NHL mortar, or buying coarse red sand (limited choice) and mixing with NHL. I'm not sure how colour-fast are the ready mixed mortars? Advice appreciated. Thanks

Can't comment on ready mix mortars, but.... I have been using pigments to colour lime plaster with some degree of success. The pigments I've been using have all been sourced from a local artist supplier. If you wish to mix your own, some finely ground brick dust may work (depending on how deep a shade of red is required). However, brick dust will act as a pozzolan which will affect the setting time of your lime mix.

Hi @Burnymill maybe trying phoning Masons Mortar - they are local to you (relatively-speaking; Glasgow/Edinburgh). They might be able to help with colour matching or can at least give you advice on what most of their customers use in your scenario.
