Colour options for b/w cottage

Hello to you all, my name is Peter and I own a 400 year old half timbered black and white cottage in Warwickshire.
My problem is that I am unsure which colour I should paint the windows and front door. I want to get away from the normal white window frames with black sills.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I know the building's not limewashed in white, but here's an example of oak in its naturally weathered state. The idea's the same.




Are your windows like this, or have they been modernised with sliding sashes (perhaps as 18th century upgrade or similar)?

Hi,
We lived in Walthamstow, London until 7 months ago, now enjoying proper village life and period living. Well we resided in a little place called Walthamstow village (no laughter please) and in the Village there was a very old house that sounds just like yours and about 2 years ago it was done up as it was in a pretty bad way,

But Peter wanted to know what colour to do the doors and windows, so perhaps fluorescent yellow would go well with the pink?

I have a painted swatch in that very colour from Little Hall on my dash board!

I grew up near Walthamstow village and it is very nice - one of only a few villages in London along with Hampsted, Dulwich. They had a right carry on with the bloke who put a massive uPVC window in the front of his Cafe - still ongoing. I think the Conservation officer said the Plastic one in white looked better than the "fussy" small Georgian one.

My cottage is not so grand or ornate as the pics posted, it is a small low roofed building with dormer windows. It is timber framed (painted black) with brick infills (painted white) and small soft wood windows with small flat Georgian style panes. The front door is a stable door.

Not too sure about the flourescent pink :roll:

Any more advice would be much appreciated

Where abouts did you grow up , we lived in in Ravenswood road just round the back of Orford Road and thats where the UPVC window fiasco is. A little old shop in the same road that use to sell odds and sodds was sold of by a neighbour's mum and in the garden there was a lovely old coach house that was destroyed to make way for a new dwelling :x . Also there was a old funeral directors just to the back of the old house posted that had lots of work done too. We lived in Walthamstow quite a while tell you the truth going down the pan. Did you leave as a child.

We lived in Kingsley road but left at a very young age, my Father remained until this Feb when he moved to NZ after he had retired. My Mother worked in the Libary on Forest road years ago.

I went back more recently before he moved but never went to school there as we lived overseas on and off until 2004.

I'm using linseed paints for all my exterior joinery, as have been very disappointed by the poor performance of alkyd paints.

Holkham do some lovely colours for linseed, but I am sticking with white for everything to keep things simple (and cheap).

The Information page on PPUK has an excellent article on how to paint windows, including tips on painting sashes and frames in different colours. And how NOT to do it!

It's only my opinion, but black frames with white sashes can look good against white walls.

Is your house in a terrace? If so and all your neighbours have white windows a drastic colour change would clash.

If you've got a digital camera and MdB's computer graphic skills you could try a few colour schemes out before you wield a brush. Maybe even post some pics here so we can give them the thumbs up (or down).

Other than that, it's up to you to pick a colour you like - have a look around at similar buildings in your and see what works.
