Cobbles!!

Good evening all,

Ok second help request....

I've demolished internal walls of an old outbuilding, 5mx6m, dug up about of foot of "ughh(!)" from the floor and found i have 'cobbles'...hoooooorayyyy!

I'll call them cobbles but actually mostly they're big pebbles (I'm near a beach) ranging in size from 4inches across to (I kid you not) 18inches!!!!

Where they're not pebbles (dinosaur eggs??????!!!) they're smoothish stones, I assume dug up from the land when the cottages were built about 250 yrs ago.

Here's the rub, i want to keep them but one can't walk on them without turning one's ankle every step. I may reuse the building as a studio in the future so i'd like to make it as dry as possible.

I've had to take them up as the floor levels are all over the place, but I've taken loads of photos so that I could re-lay them again....

BUT how?!

Hello stormdog

To post a photo, first ensure that you have the suitably sized digital photo on your hard drive. About 650 pixels wide is a good size.

Now click the Post a reply button. Below the text box in which you type your reply, you'll see two tabs marked Options and Upload attachment. Click the latter.

Against the word Filename click the Browse... button. Browse your computer until you find your photo - click on it, then click the Open button.

Once the route to the photo appears in the Filename box, click the Add the file button. You can type a comment about the picture if you want to.

After a short time, the name of the photo will appear. Click your cursor in the typing box where you want the picture to appear, then click the Place inline button.

The picture is now in your post.

Mi scusi, Emiddio. I'm afraid my six words of Italian don't include such expressions as "upload", "filename" and "place inline"!

Actually, I didn't know that you had trouble uploading images, although I do remember that Flyfisher posted some for you. I hope the above notes will help you.

Ixia - there's no need to change your habit of uploading to Photobucket. It is, in some ways, a more flexible way to do the job.

Your description makes me think of some sort of cattle-shed or stable (you did say it's an outbuilding, didn't you?)

Would it be possible to re-lay the floor pressing the stones into a deepish bed of mortar and then pointing so that the finished surface isn't too uncomfortably uneven?

If my understanding is correct then 'cobbles' might be the best way of describing this floor, i.e. sort of cobbles but not quite.

I've always thought of cobbles as being those square lumps of granite (or similar) that old cobbled roads were made from. They were certainly rough but, being sort of flat, they made a reasonable surface to walk upon.

The 'cobbles' described here sound more like large beach pebbles and, although no doubt quite smooth and attractive-looking, I imagine them as being more generally rounded. This will make them difficult to abut as closely as what I imaging as cobbles and are therefore likely to create a much rougher (mor undulating?) surface, which would make it easier to twist an ankle that 'real' cobbles. They could, of course, be levelled to a greater or lesser extent with mortar, but that may not give the desired appearance.

I may have completely misinterpreted things though. A photograph, or two, would be invaluable - as ever.

A desirable idea, but given that the cobbles are vaguely spherical, then the more that the floor is levelled up with mortar, the less of them one would see. I have some considerable sympathy for stormdog - it's not a surface I would like to walk on.

If you like them but hate walking on them you could use them to face a garden wall. The use of cobbles (rather than the more widely reported flint) is not uncommon, particularly near the sea.
