CO approval..has anyone managed to get it for external rendering?

Hi,

With the ongoing issues of water penetration to the front walls of our Grade II listed building I am wondering if anyone has sought and been approved permission to render and limewash a building which historically was never rendered, I am just trying to find a way to make the building watertight because even after lime pointing and lime plastering internally it is still like a sponge!

Can you post any pictures of exterior/damp interior?

Yuk. How dispiriting.

Is rendering a local characteristic?
Or perhaps tile or slate hanging or wood cladding?

Yours surely cannot be the only local house with water penetration problems.

Is the problem on all four walls?
Any evidence that the house was ever rendered?

Hi Roger yes I will try to post up some pictures I just find it a bit of a phaff to load them up on here.

Problem only seems to be on the front gables which face the sea, we are elevated and all the weather hits that front. We do have quite a few cottages surrounding us which are probably stone & cob and they are rendered in parts and all are limewashed. The main problem is the type of stone, killas which is so soft in places you can mark it with a finger nail and it acts just like a sponge. I think we will have to get the CO out (we'll have to pay £150 for this mind you) so that we can talk about options because clearly we have not solved this by correct pointing and internal rendering. I would say the building has always suffered in this way because we took off cement rendering from the inside which had been coated in black jack presumably to try to stop this, also plenty of tins of non breathable silicon stuff in the sheds when we arrived so the previous owners had also tried....about the only bit of so called 'maintenance' they did do in 20 odd years!

Its the CO's call, but arguments you can use are
It is in the local vernacular, other similar houses in the area have done it
and
It will help preserve the special interest of the building, which is currently degrading
