I quite like my current builder. He is stripping years of accumulated oil based and other non breathable paint from my 1840 stucco facade and repairing it with lime. But when he announced to me this afternoon that he had reached the final, irremovable lime layer I knew something was not right. He told me that his paint stripping chemical and high temperature stream jet wouldn't shift it, so it must be lime. A year ago I had done some exploratory stripping myself and had managed to get down to a lower level than this.
I brought out my heat gun. "If this melts it, it's paint not lime", said I. He couldn't disagree. He and his team gathered round. The gun was switched on. It melted. "Try this bit here, it's different" he suggested. That melted too. I am pleased to say he conceded defeat gracefully and said he would try a different chemical on that final layer..
They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. If so, no knowledge must be fatal.
