Cleaning floors

Last week someone suggested using scotchbrite pads to clean up a floor. I have just done that to great effect and successfully removed all the adhesive and gunk on our kitchen floor, from which we had removed some exceedingly horrible black slate. The (still modern) polished travertine floor has cleaned up well using the scotchbrite and HG porcelain floor cleaner. Whilst I decide whether to take that level up as well, or live with it, do I need to seal it again after such a scouring, if so what do I use? Or, alternatively, since the travertine is the wrong colour can I paint it with anything? Just needs to last until the spring when the budget picks up again.

Jocelyn - HG do a stone floor sealing product which is suitable for travertine. But it really depends upon your long term intent. If you are sure you will be lifting the travertine in the Spring, then I wouldn't worry....it might get dirty in the meantime, but who cares?

Painting it would seem a little extreme - floor paint never works well IMO for the same reason that floor varnish doesn't....you will soon discover the high traffic areas wearing differently to the rest of the floor and it will look messy.

Apart from that...if you are going to lift the travertine, I would strongly suggest you do it with care and consider eBay - you'll be surprised how much some people will be prepared to pay for your unpainted travertine

:lol: :lol: Yer, well so is 'im indoors' but he's scrubbed a deck or two!

I'll just add that I did have an electric scrubber --sorry I mean scrubbing machine, but I threw it out when we moved so it had to be a scotchbrite.Now I have got good arm muscles as well as housemaid's knee.
