I am in the process of removing masonry paint from Bath Stone. After several tests of different methods, I have settled on a chemical poultice method which is effective but expensive. I am left with a resonable surface but it still needs a clean to bring the original colour back. Can anyone recommend a cleaner or is there a mechanical method that would give a good surface . All advice much appreciated . Best wishes - Nick

Hilti do a specialist grinder for paint removal, however I would suggest it was far to aggressive for soft Bath stone even in experienced hands so probably a non starter.
However look into the Doff and Jos systems, search the net for local contractors, it will clean all sorts of deposits from the stone without damaging the stone. Search the net for a local contractor would be my advice or even hire a machine your self. Maybe even possible to remove the paint with it.

I have just finished a restoration project which involved the removal of 50 years of masonry paint from a building. Initially we thought that it was brick but it turned out to have an intricate inlay of bath stone diamonds and Minton tiles. Also very finely carved bath stone lintels and cills.
I would strongly recommend the doff system. Google for details. It is non abrasive and doesn't damage the stone.
One word of caution. Bath Stone isn't really very good! It has a lovely colour but it is very prone to acid rain damage and cracking. Often this is why it has been painted over so perhaps a trail area first. In the past I have had to repair and then do a lime shelter coat to get the building to look right.

Many thanks for those, garnett. Those stone mouldings and tiles are wonderful, but I don't see the stone diamonds. What is the building? I notice that the photos are called "The Warehouse".

Hi - thanks for all the replies. I have got through to the stone so I am beyond paint stripping . I was hoping there was a proprietary cleaner for the surface although I have been told to use a French drag - interesting results from Google on that. Interesting point about the actual quality of Bath Stone as well. Any ideas most welcome . Best wishes - Nick
