Cleaning a polished slate fire surround.

Can anyone recommend, please, he best way to remove years of grime from a polished slate fire surround?

Hello Manks. Everyone seems to be ignoring you.

I'm no expert on this, but I would start with a bucket of detergenty water and a scrubbing brush. If it's just grime that you need to get off, that should do the trick.

However, if that's not intensive enough, have a look at this website - it's got some useful information on cleaning slate.

I had pretty much settled on a bucket of Flash and a medium brush, followed by a coat of clear wax or Mr Sheen.

Boiled linseed oil does a nice job on slate. Just be careful not to use it while there's a fire in the fireplace!

Not sure it would work on this. The finish is akin to marble - its a glossy finish, not a slatey one.
