Cleaning 17th centruy oak staircase

We have just bought a 17th Century house with a large dark wooden oak staircase. I have spent a few hours cleaning it with soap and water and a big brush and have managed to clean off quite a bit but it still looks dirty and uneven in colour. The previous owners had a large dirty dog and not much inclination to clean so it is really very dirty.

Does anyone have any miracle cleaners or recommendations as to what I can do to bring it back to its former glory?

Any suggestions really apreciated.

You've probably already cleaned off what the previous owner's dog left behind. But there's another three hundred years worth of owners and their dogs to get through. That is the patina of age that you have just paid so much for - so go easy on the cleaning and start thinking about what oil or wax you are going to use.
