Having just spent the day pulling down the nasty rotton chipboard ceiling on my 200yr old cottage we need to start thinking about what is going to replace it. We have already decided to use limeplaster on the walls but really don`t cherish the thought of lathe & plastering the ceiling or having to wait for months before I can use the room above it while it dries out. I have seen reference on another site to Clayboard as an alternative to lathe & plaster. Is this a viable alternative I haven`t heard it mentioned on here before? I really don`t want to put gypsum back up there as I presume this goes against the whole breathability ethos...... or can you get away with it on the ceiling.

Any advice would be much appreciated

PS And yes I did let out a rather girly scream when the dead mouse almost landed on my head when I was pulling the boards down in the bedroom.................

Heraklith is a good alternative, and cheaper. It's breathable. takes plaster well and provides insulation. Failing that, reed matting is even cheaper but not as convenient.

An advantage of lath and plaster is that you can "fit" it to uneven joists without having the angled joints that you get with plasterbaord. Also, if your house moves around, the l&p hopefully doesnt crack along the joints between the boards straight away.

You dont have to wait for months though - a few weeks whilst its done. Cost is a problem though, unless you do it yourself you get charged a lot.

I was thinking about clayboard too for my partition wall that I need to put back up. I was at Ty-Mawr last week on an introduction to Lime one day course (http://www.lime.org.uk) and they have stopped selling it it seems. I think cost was one of the reasons mentioned. They now recommend their Building Boards. As they are quite local to me I will probably go with that.

Just wanted to add, they are a great team at Ty-Mawr and very enthusastic in what they are showing you. They also make you feel very welcome and take very good care of everyone during the day. Even the other half who I dragged along for support enjoyed the day very much even if I did cover her in Lime plaster at one stage. Good job she had her goggles on. :|
