Hi, we have a grade II listed timber framed brick panel infil farmhouse - It has been extended over the years and almost doubled in size during the victorian period. The whole house has a machined red clay tiled roof held on by nails, batton and compo.
We brought the house several mths ago and at the last count we are up to 11 different leaks. It just hasnt been maintained correctly so there are almost as many causes as leaks - the lead is split it some valleys, the tiles are shailed in other parts and in parts the water is getting in through cracked compo. In most places the route cause can be tracked to incorrect 'patching' either through materials used or method.
Have consulted with several roofing companies we decided the best way of approaching this was to take off the whole roof and re-lay where-ever possible re-using the exisiting tiles and where replacements where needed using colour matched re-claimed ones.
My brother is doing the work - he is a qualified roofer but hasnt worked on a listed building before - Finally I get to the point! -
We dont know what to use to compo the roof - On a normal house this would be a sand and cement mix but is this appropriate? What proportions should the mix be and if sand, should it be a standard soft building sand or something else?
Many Thanks
