I need to check my soil to see if it's suitable. I need to get rid of my nasty plaster, and I'm too tight to buy lime if I can get the materials for nothing .

If you can't get clay from your garden, is it the right material to use on your period house? Unless it was a house built for someone very rich who could afford to buy in whatever materials they wanted

dunno , but i dont think the local council would appreciate me digging clay out of the local ponds or streams with a mini digger.

Unfortunately, none of this (apart from the info ) is free - so lime plaster may still win out.

It might be better to think 'earth' rather than 'clay'.

There'll be some in your back garden. Just try the stuff from more than six inches down.
