Clay paint: alternative suppliers.

We've used 3 different colours of Earthborne clay paint and have been really disappointed with how far they differ from the colour charts, inevitably coming up paler in reality compared with the print. The thing is, there is nothing left on their colour chart that is anything like our desired colour. We've tried all the options. So, are there any other suppliers of clay paint? We're painting onto lime plastered walls internally.

Can you darken by adding your own pigment? I guess the answer will be yes but not sure how practical that is. I mixed my own linseed paint from pigment and oil, the mixing part was easy but I was glad that someone who knew what they were doing provided the measured pigment (linseed paint company)

We've gone down the route of mixing paint colours before, and would never do it again. It's fine at the time, but when you need to match something, or re-paint, you can never get it spot on.

I wish I had read this post and taken note of the contents!
I can wholeheartedly agree with the Earthborn paints being a shade lighter. I too was wondering about alternative suppliers. So, if anyone is reading this - has anyone used the Kreidezeit clay paint and what are their thoughts.

I am wondering about the coverage and the shades according to the charts, thoughts anyone?

I have the same dilemma at the moment and have been researching Auro 524. I wondered if anybody had tried this paint.

I’ve used Earthborn paints and can’t say I’ve noticed big discrepancies between their colour charts and the actual paints. However, it’s probably more accurate to say that I’ve never trusted ANY colour charts, except as a basic guide, and always end up buying a number of sample pots and painting large patches on the walls in question. When I’ve found the colour I like it’s then just a case of buying a large tin without having to worry about whether it will match.

Relying on printed colour samples, brochure photos or computer screens to judge the precise colour of paint is a recipe for disappointment, not only because of absolute accuracy but also because the human eye is highly susceptible to being "fooled" depending on lighting and adjacent colours. So what looks subjectively good in one setting might seem very different in another.

Did you get a solution, Mike. We're playing the same game right now.

We used earthborn on our current place for both clay paint and silicate and was very happy, but our new place needs a bit bolder colours . We are currently looking at Keim who certainly do the bold colours, but are "reassuringly expensive" as the saying goes.

We have a load of lime render externally, plus mostly lime plaster plus odds and sods of gypsum in the extension internally that need painting. Only the lime needs to breathe but it would probably look odd to put ultra-matt clay or keim on the old part of the house and shiny silk on the extension...

I admit to having a vested interest but Rose of Jericho hand make to order a range of colourful, breathable paints made from natural pigments and can also create special colours to order.

Colour is to some degree limited by the type of pigment, adding too much pigment to achieve a more vivid colour will run the risk of a powdery paint.

Sadly I am very excited to have ordered some of the Keim paint samples. Most helpful on the phone, will see if the colours are any better - have I told you about the claypaint purple, I thought in the dim light in which I was painting the bedroom that the 'Inglenook' would be a lovely subtle colour. In the reality of daylight it is like a colouring pen/1970's purple - nothing subtle! Will have to go over the walls with something else.

I am delighted to report that the Keim paint samples came near enough the next day and the colour range is tremendous - well compared to Earthborn it is - paint goes on a dream, the samples have, so will be ordering this week.

We went with Earthborn claypaint, ordered from Mike Wye, for the internal. Got 50 litres as a starter , will order the rest once we work out whether the colours we ordered are the final ones, or to be used as an undercoat :roll:

Still trying to work out what do to externally - Keim royalan being the current favorite, but struggling with the huge choice of colours...

We will probably go with Earthborn as well due to the fact that we also want to paint some of the walls in the same room that are plasterboard and as far as well could tell that is not possible with Keim.

Unlike Sockistis, we found Earthborn's Inglenook paler and less purple than hoped in a little attic bathroom. Subsequently we used the darker and more vibrant F&B Brassica as an equivalent colour in the neighbouring bedroom and even that is less purple and more grey than expected. Our decorator says that in her experience paint colours always vary enormously and are basically completely unpredictable until they are on the walls.

My husband says that the Earthborn comes out paler as well.
