Choice of glass for single glazing

I am wondering if I could have made a more effective choice when glazing new windows. My new windows (linseed oil painted) have just been receiving bog standard 4 mm glass from the local merchant as and when needed. Could I have used something like K glass and got better "thermal performance ?. Would the, I assume, higher cost have been justified ?, and how would one know which way round to fit it when I got it home?

You could use Pilkington K for single glazing. Increases in both thermal insulation and cost would be modest, and although the 'hard' coat is pretty tough I'm not sure how long it would last under conditions of vigorous cleaning. You certainly couldn't use a low-e soft coat.

When you get Pilk K it comes with a sticker on it saying which way round it goes. If you lose the sticker you would need an electronic gadjet that detects surface coatings. They cost about £50.

For single glazing I'd always go for hand made mouth blown cylinder glass - so much prettier.

I'm about to send for some sun filter film to stick over an existing window, as the sun is bleaching a table standing in front of it.

The film is not expensive and it claims additionally that it will help prevent heat escaping into the garden.

Not sure how valid the claims are, but if it could be worth a try.

The glass in my sashes (1860) are all curvy and wobbly if you look to the side of them does this poosibly make them original to when the house was built, does anyone know, hope you don't mind me posting here.

Sounds like your house is gradually compressing due to it's age which is squashing the glass and making it wavy. :wink:

Ignore that man. Yes, your glass is probably original to 1860. It is most likely to be mouth blown cylinder glass. It came in various degrees of wobblyness. You can still buy glass made in the same way.

Has it little elongated bubbles in?

These are 'seeds', and it's sometimes known as seed glass.

Yep, there appears to be long bubbles, not sure if it is in every pane of glass, but I am sure going to have a good look in the light of day tomorrow.

Yes well, I'm having to install 14 windows, comprising 26 lights and 60 panes of glass overall. Choice of glass or food. I can always go back on them when the lottery comes in.
