Chimney Linings

Hi

Wondered if anyone could help. We need one, possibly 2 of our chimneys re-lined and have had 3 quotes, all sayng different things. One was Thermocrete who I think are nationwide and would put the lining down the chimney from the top, this was the cheapest and it would seem the easiest. The other company said they would do a similar thing but would have to knock into the chimney breast in the top floor and the third company would have to knock into the chimney breast at regular intervals all the way up.

Does anyone know which method is best?

There have been many posts about this in the past. The one with 'crete' in the name suggests it's concrete poured down the chimney, with the flue formed by an inflatable sausage. Might not be compatible with your period property, which might like to creak and groan and move a little on its foundations (if it has any) and is presumably irreversible. Best repair practice would suggest avoid it.

I had a clay liner one installed years ago, it does mean breaking into most of the chimney breast and building a new flue from clay sections which fit one on top of the other.

Hi, do you remember how much that cost?

None of the companies have suggested using clay, I think they are all concrete type mixes.

I thought the metal tubes were only suitable for stoves and we have open fires.

Can't say what the cost was as it was part of a larger renovation.

Individual concrete chimney liners should be ok as well.

You can use the metal ones - you need to have a metal gather made which fits in the top of the fireplace and joins to the flexi liner.

If your chimney isnt very straight or has lots of tight bends then you might need to break into the chimney at a few points regardless of the method you choose. Even (although they will probably say not) the chimneycrete system - something needs to keep the sausage away from the edges of the chimney.

Thanks very much for all your advice - it's been very helpful. I think we might need to look into the metal liners - although I'm not sure who would fit them as none of the companies we have had round so far do them. Would a roofer manage it? Is it quite complicated?
The other option we have is repair as the leakages are in the loft at one side of the house and through the chimney stack at the other. We've had a quote to repair and thought as it would not be much more for a liner that we should go down that route. Maybe we were wrong.

If you opt for a flexible flue on an open fire insure it's big enough. We have had several quotes for work & everybody keen to install an 8" liner & fit a fan if it didn't work. Have now reached an agreement (fingers crossed) with a local chimney man for install of a 12" liner. He will have to break into the chimney breast in the loft space to remove a section of withe to fit but at least we should be able to retain our open fire. :lol: Good link re chimney advice http://www.buildingconservation.com/articles/services/chimney.htm
