I wonder if anybody could help me identify this discolouration? It occurs one floor up from the kitchen wood burner, in a bedroom. The flue runs inside this brick wall. I've no idea if it's a leak in the liner, moisture running down from the chimney etc. The grey stuff is some kind of mortar added on, probably by the previous owners. Many thanks

It could be the result of a deteriorated liner, allowing combustion products (ie: tars) to escape inside the chimney and condense.
It could be old soot or tars that have been diluted by rainwater getting (somehow) into the top of the chimney and running down inside.
Do you know how old the liner is, and what type? Is it just a single wall flexible job?
Come to that, do you know for sure that there is a liner?

Tar is soluble in white spirit and is slightly acidic so when mixed with an alkali (caustic sode - V. STRONG or bicarbonate of soda V. weak) it will fizz a bit.
I had a newly painted wall develop some stains - first floor again, but in my case it was due to condensation on the gable end wall above it, in the loft making the top of the bedroom wall damp and the stain managed to percolate through 2 layers of aliminium paint, and three layers of stain blocking paint and migrated about 6" in from the wall on the bedroom ceiling.
