Hi,
I've taken out an old gas fire and stripped some plaster to reveal an old fireplace / stoveplace.
It has been filled in previously in two stages, In the pic you can see the original arch and the infill.
The bit under the arch is single skin, unsupported (other than by the workbench and a lump of timber that I have just placed there to stop the bricks falling) and many of the bricks just lift out. I'm intending to rebuild the blue bit up to the arch and then replaster and put a woodburner into the alcove.
The arch seems original and sound - but how do I make sure that its OK - do I assume that at 200 years old it isnt likely to go anywhere ?
thanks
Mark
