Census results

Has anyone (possibly a family researcher) rapid access to the census results?

I'm trying to find the population of England in 1901 and again in 1911. The results I keep finding are by county and it's too time consuming to do the sums!

I see the population of England and Wales was (apparently) 36,003,276 in 1911 and 32,461,105 in 1901. Any use?

I'm trying to argue that a building which served the population of London and its suburbs (some seven million people I think?) is more than of simple local interest as EH claims... it's a long story!

The 1901 census is available at http://www.ancestry.co.uk (and other places) but there are charges for this.

The 1911 is not available yet, not until 2011.

Thanks, Bower1. I found the 1901 on-line last night, but you've saved me a lot of hunting to find the petition site (a letter in this morning's paper referred to it).
It's encouraging to see how many signatories there are.

Is the petition because censoring the census results is senseless?

The census returns can give an interesting insight into the history of your house.

http://www.ancestry.co.uk has all the census for England and Wales from 1841 to 1901. You can do a 14 day trial for free (but remember to cancel it, or they will charge you).

It is possible to do address searches for some of the census years, but I didn't find these very successful. It is possible to go to the parish your house is in, and look through the actual census return pages, where you may be able to find the house. House numbers are not always recorded within the street though, it depends how thorough the person doing the census was. You'll also struggle if the house or road has changed name!

The 1901 census is also online at the National Archives and a darned sight cheaper than the exorbitant prices charges by Ancestry.co.uk (bloomin' crooks!).

I was subtly trying to suggest using the 14 day free trial, making it free! Not that I'm saying you can do that more than once with different credit cards :wink:

It might have sounded like I got commission from Ancestry!
