Ceilings in a state in Stowe House

When visiting Stowe last week, I was dismayed to see the poor condition of many of the fabulous ceilings. The dining room ceiling has apparently suffered from having butter pats hurled at it by the boys ( Penners?), and in the astonishing oval shaped Marble Salon ( shown here http://www.countrylifeimages.co.uk/Image.aspx?id=ff4e7e9c-df04-43f3-80f8-a738984a5fe1&rd=2%7C%20marble%20saloon%7C%7C1%7C20%7C29%7C150 ) a tennis ball has been wedged onto a sharp point of one of the coffers. Apparently it's been there such a long time that when the decorators painted the ceiling last time they didn't have the heart to take it down and so just painted over the top of it.
Come on Penners, fess up, you put it there didn't you. :wink:

Nothing exciting ever happened at St Thrilda's - oh, there was some tart who took her clothes off in front of the National Press and jumped in the river nude, but I didn't know her.

I can assure you that butter pats were never hurled at the ceiling. Butter? Given the quality of food that was served, the slightest molecule of butter would have been jealously horded, to be scraped covertly on to the toast in place of the crappy margarine that was served.

That shapely lady wasn't in place in the Rotundo in my day. I think there was a fear that too many boys would go blind.

But I would certainly have volunteered for the Shirley Eaton decorating contract 8)

As for spraying statues gold, the girls of a well known girls school in Wantage sprayed the statue of King Alfred green--- again, that was around 1959!!!!!
