CE compliance for windows?

Our local uPVC company's radio advert is touting its CE mark compliance and that it is now a legal requirement for all new windows to comply - their message is don't buy anyone else's products in case you later have to rip them out!

Seems CE rules now apply to all building products (from July 13). It is OK to buy pre-made certified units and install these, but anyone that installs glazing units to uncertified frames is non-compliant.

Sounds like another nail in the coffin of the local joiner being able to do small-scale window replacement. And goodness knows where it leaves those of us at the DIY end of things.

It'll affect dodgy uPVC companies more than local joiners. CE doesn't apply to DIY so the joiner can make the frames and you put the glass in (he might lend you hand FOC while he's there :wink: ).

New windows will still need to comply with BC even if DIY (that is if they are likely to find out or care). The CE will ll be enforced by Trading Standards so unless you complain to them, I think they will have bigger fish to fry.

I may be a bit out of date these days but my understanding of the 'CE mark' is that is simply means that something is self-certified to meet whatever standards the product is legally required to meet.

On its own, the CE mark means very little; the useful information will be contained within the 'certificate of compliance', which is usually provided by the manufacturers or, sometimes, the importer or distributor. It is this certificate that should specify the actual standards that the product complies with.
