casting fireplace bars

Hello there

I have just bought a fireplace for one of the bedrooms in my house that matches the fireplaces in the other two bedrooms. It's a little cast iron combination. I may not be able to put this in as for some reason my girlfriend is adamant that she doesn't want a fireplace in there and I'm not going to kick up a stink about it. However it is still useful even if I can't put it in as it has some removable bars that the fireplace in the main bedroom is missing. However I hate the idea of plundering a very nice and complete fireplace for parts, so I would like to get the bars cast. Does anyone know a foundry that can cast from an original for a reasonable cost??? I know a salvage yard near me that will fabricate bars for a reasonable cost (around £60 I think) but casting would be nicer if at all possible!.

Try the Ironbridge Gorge museum?

The foundry at Blists Hill does traditional sand casting of their own products as a demonstration of Victorian methods.
I don't know if they accept small jobs from 'outside' customers, but it's possibly worth enquiring.

It is indeed a nice day out (I was there on Sunday with my youngest). Let me know how you get on - I tried to get something cast there with no success, although I was asking for a much larger item.

Ironbridge Museum, is that Blist's Hill? I donated quite a few castings and an old lead pump along with other things to the Plumbers Shop there. I loved the place.

I might be able to help out with casting those bars for you but it would mean getting them down to Somerset (by post perhaps?) But I would need to make a few phone calls first. This would be if you can't get them done elsewhere.

It's 10 museums / attractions, of which Blist's Hill open air museum is one. An annual family pass makes it a great place to take the kids if like me you live close by!

It's not all industrial heritage, there is a good variety there.

Weald and Downland Museum is another good place to visit. At one time in the Company of Plumbers barn was a series of pictures of my hands casting a lead rabbit. What a claim to fame!!!!
