cast iron hinges

I've just stripped the many layers of paint off the old cast iron hinges and then used a wire brush in my drill to finish the cleaning.
I can still see the odd bit of rust in the pits of the iron, should I be too worried by these?
What should my final finish be?

Then to fix them to the new door and hang it

Depends how fussy you're being. Some people would paint over them again, so it wouldn't matter. I quite like the look of cast hinges, and my inner engineer winces at the idea of gumming up any mechanism with paint. I stripped mine with Rustins 'Strypit', which is my solvent paintstripper of choice. All I need now is a reliable source of steel slot screws to replace the mangled originals.

Try Clerkenwell Screws if you are in London. Its a small shop quite close to Hatton Garden, with no website as far as I know, but very good for this kind of thing.

I carefully removed my nails and should be able to reuse them, although obviously very old, they are in very good condition.

Should I leave the hinges "as is" though, or a coat of beeswax or something else before fitting? I don't fancy painting them again

I just wire wooled mine and then applied a mid brown Briwax/Fiddes wax they've come up lovely, like a sort of burnished look.

I don't know what to apply but yes, something needs applying. It will rust so quickly otherwise.

Have you any bees wax?
