Cast Iron Gutters

Now I can see the end of the tunnel re the Windows refurbishment 2006 project - (Lime mortar is being done this Saturday) - My thoughts have turned to guttering!!!! I have one piece of 'original'? iron down pipe and the rest is yuuuukkk Plastic grey guttering and down pipes painted white & now peeling +++ .Whilst at the reclamation yard the other day I noticed they had lots of Cast Iron Guttering for sale. Its got me thinking about replacing all mine!. My questions for you venerable PPUK folk are a.) Anyone any idea what 18thC gutters were like were they cast iron,if so were they round or squareish b.) when you buy reclaimed guttering how do you know you aren't buying rusted through bits that will leak.c.) How do you refurbish them prior to putting them up and finally how do you get brackets to fix them up? Gutters may form first quarter 2007 project methinks.

Provided its a decent reclamation yard they should be able to answer all those questions for you. They will either carry out refurbishment on site or recommend someone as well. My local yard put my mind at rest about it. They will also advise shape and type for style/period of building. I would love it too, like you I have one remaining down pipe, the rest all black plastic. Sadly, funds don't stretch to that yet.

Nobody mentioned lining the wooden gutters with lead ? Which I have seen - or does that count as a lead gutter ?

Biff, can I make a really minor comment on your web site ? It would be nice to have the navigation options at the bottom of the page as well, so that having read and scrolled down you dont have to then scroll back up again to move on to the next page.

Thanks all - Sue you're scaring me I didn't ask price !!! LEAD lined wooden ones good grief gentlemen do you think I'm made of money?!!!! Mind you Biff you're probably right and the orignal ones were wood - the cottage was sold by a farmer to his Carpenter originally I gather perhaps he made his own?

Well they are the same profile as the first picture on your page. They aren't old. They are in conjunction with cast iron down pipes.

They used to be on metal brackets which bashed in to the wall but a lot were rusted so before I found PPUK I had some more made at the engineers next to work.

I have had some of the not very old ones replaced already as they were rotten. I painted them with black sikkens. I will be replacing some more and if I can get black linseed paint I will be trying that next time.

Are they pine? Who supplied them?

I don't think they are pine. They appear to be some naff softwood but I can ask my brother in law (a joiner) what he thinks they are made of.

They were from EBM in bolton, a builders merchants.
