Cast Iron Gutters - Joints

Hi all.

Instead of the traditional red lead putty, do members favour rubber gaskets or silicone sealant when jointing cast iron gutters?

My new gutters have the rubber gaskets. Long term they might last longer when the joint starts rusting. But I would happily coble odd bits together with some thing mastic, leadmate etc.

Roof & Gutter sealant. Works a treat, and it's black too, if you're painting your gutters black like most folks.

Stuck in the Middle Ages perhaps, but I still find old fashioned linseed putty to be good. Easy to work (and rework/remove when the next occupant needs to). Cheap and cheerful, easily available and a tub in the garage comes in handy for all sorts of filler jobs.

Ok, thanks all – that’s a diversity of opinion!

And on the paint job? Is hammerite considered serviceable both in and out of gutters?

p.s. I found a flap sanding disc on the angle grinder took the old paint and rust off like a dream.

I wouldn't use the hammered finish Hammerite myself, but the smooth finish would be fine. However, you're paying for the brand.

In the past I've used Screwfix's own brand cheap metal paint and it's lasting very well. However, the stuff they sell now is water based, not sure if that will be as good.

Not cheap, but that doesn't matter. What matters is will it last. Yes, it will.

I've not much to contribute to this topic except to say that it's good practice to keep the collar at the top of the fall so that water is'nt running into the joint but over it.
