Cast Iron Fire Installation

I wonder if anyone can help with a problem I've got? I've recently purchased a cast iron combination fireplace and I'm in the process of fitting it. I a few questions I hope someone can help mw with;

1. If I attached the fire place directly to the plaster on the chimney breast, how do I seal the fire to stop smoke etc. from staining the plaster above the shelf?

2. If I plaster the fireplace into position will this be a sufficient seal?

3. I've heard fire rope can be used to seal fireplaces. Where does this go?

Fix it to the brickwork, and plaster over it.

Unless its a bit more modern, in which case I'd just use silicone (thats what I did on my gas fire).

We have a cast iron fire place fitted. We bolted it to the the wall and then plastered round it.
I think you can use fire cement as well, to seal any gaps, but wouldn't like to say for definite.
We've had no problems with soot or smoke leaking through behind the shelf.
