I'd want to see a bit more of the context than that one photo - it may be in Beverley, but it looks like a very red-brick Victorian bit of Beverley, so although some of the detailing's a bit crude I'm not sure it's as bad as all that.

It does seem to be tacked on to another building, presumably listed so worth an investigate...

Sorry - context or not, that's a real monstrosity, imho. Just building it out of brick, in a brick area, isn't enough of an excuse.

I have to say I don't at all see the student block in brick as a carbuncle.

Unlike the thing built for students in Carlisle, which saw the demolition of its oldest pub in order to build, which I must take a picture of...

Have to say though, that I quite like St George's Tower in Leicester (I was at University in Leicester myself and can assure everyone that there is much worse architecture than this).
