The examples illustrated do seem far more extreme than the usual scratched symbols on lintels.

I agree. It may be speculative to guess the motives to people and times we can barely relate to but, in the end, it is just a guess and I agree that we shouldn't overlook the possibility that fun and mischief might have been behind some of these things.

I wish somebody would convey this idea to some of the pretentious tw*ts who make high-flown TV programmes, explaining the motivations and state-of-mind of artists who have painted famous works. (Yes, Mr Januszczak, I include you).
Renoir: "Ooh - that's a nice street scene. I reckon I could flog a picture of that."
Januszczak: "Here, Renoir is commenting slyly on the class divisions apparent in Parisian society, as demonstrated by the haughty expression on the face of the nobleman and the seductive glance of the overdressed Lady of the Night. The carriage is clearly a metaphor for her desire to be upwardly mobile in the city's hierarchy."

Maeshowe reminds me of travelling in the Himalaya's as a teenager, when surrounded for the first time by people who speak another language your mind wonders and wanders as to what they are saying to eachother....surely they must all be philosophers, priests, discussing Shiva or Nirvana.
Most of the time though they were just banging on about the latest Bollywood film, the weather, the new courting couple in the village, the state of the roads.....Alan Bennett's each one of 'em
