Can Victorian clay tiles be sealed?

We have a red clay tiled floor in the kitchen. They’re the typical Victorian variety – handmade jobs, roughly 6 x 6 inches and about 2” thick but are hard to keep nice because they’re so porous. Any ideas on how to seal them? I recall reading somewhere – maybe on this forum long ago – that Thompson’s Water Seal goes sticky after a while so aside from that I don’t know of anything that might do.

I'm in the process of cleaning them and they're coming up a treat, but of course they won't stay pretty without more elbow grease in the future.

Boiled linseed oil will seal porous clay floor tiles. You can also add another one or two coats of water based sealer above the boiled linseed oil if you want, this will give a very smooth finish and longer lasting.
