Can I use a floor cleaner to clean a stone floor?

Our stone floor has become filthy (us, tradespeople, dogs etc in and out) and it has no finish on it yet. We've cleaned one stone with just water and a sponge and it's come up really well. However, I'd be there forever if I tried to do the lot by hand!! So, I was thinking of using a floor cleaner (like a steam cleaner or Vax or something) to do it. Would this be ok? Are there any reasons for not using one? And can anyone recommend a particluar one that would work well? Thanks for any advice.

I've become a great fan of those carpet-cleaning machines* that almost simultaneously squirt and suck up soapy liquid. I used one on our son's wooden floors after some very messy builders had done their worst, and the results were excellent.
All done without any of that hands-and-knees nonsense, the wood was left only slightly damp, and was bone dry in an hour or so.

*hired from that company known only by its initials.

Thanks, Moo, that sounds like the perfect solution I'm going to spend enough time on my hands and knees pointing and waxing/oiling the floor without cleaning it as well :shock: You've just saved me hours and hours of work. Thank you so much
