My home, which was once an old Sunday school, was built around 1880 and has original lath plaster walls throughout i.e. the internal walls are lath plaster on a timber frame and the external walls are lath plaster fixed to 9” brickwork. All are in pretty good condition. The original lime plaster seems to be pretty strong and hard. I would like to know if it would be possible to tile one of the lath plaster on brickwork walls?
When the building had a change of use back in the 1980’s from a Sunday school to a home, various rooms within the building were adapted e.g. a bible study room became a bedroom etc. That also applies to my kitchen (I’m not sure what that used to be) but at the moment one of the longest walls in the kitchen accommodates all the working parts i.e. a sink and draining board, dish washer, a 900 mm wide cooker located centrally along the wall with an extractor hood over plus various work tops at 900 mm high with cupboards and draws under. This particular wall is lath and plaster on external 9” brickwork and is 4500 mm(15 ft) long x 3650 mm(12 ft) high from floor to ceiling. it is only broken up by two large arched windows each 1850 mm (6 ft) high x 1065 mm (3 ft) wide which are equidistantly positioned each side of the central cooker hood.
For both cleanliness and appearance, I would like to tile this entire wall with brick size tiles (old public lavatory type tiles) but I’m not prepared to remove the original lath plaster. As mentioned the plaster seems very sound and hard but would it be a strong enough frame to take the weight of the tiles?
