Bathroom and landing ceiling s being prepped and skimmed tomorrow---chipping back that b****y stuff is not for the faint hearted. We are going out!
Trouble is the budget will only stretch to doing 2 or 3 areas at a time so I am prolonging the agony.

Be careful if its old as it could contain asbestos.

Bennoa1 , thank you! The cottage was built in 1989. There have been many debates on here about the presence of asbestos in Artex, and in response to my forum queries some time ago, the general consensus of opinion was that in all probability there is low risk in this instance. Odd really, this cottage is our first ever 'modern ' home, and none of our listed, previous, homes had even a hint of asbestos in them!

Fortunately our artex ceilings resemble sugar icing frosting on a cake so the plasterer simply used a blade on a pole to scrape off the worst of the peaks and plastered over the top! Not as messy as I expected which has given me confidence to carry on around the cottage bit by bit. Ironically the Plasterer told me that he spent 4 years learning to apply the stuff when he was an apprentice and now most of his days are spent removing it all!!

Now we have to live with murky pink ceilings for 4 days or so! I suppose I could pretend that I have painted them in a well know manufacturers 'Plaster' emulsion!!!

I spent a lot of Saturday removing Artex from my dining room ceiling with a wallpaper steamer. Grim job. Three and half hours to take it off and a nearly two to clean up the mess. Looks better already.
