Burnt Sand Mastic recipe and application etc

Hi all - the saga of Lizzys windows moves forward slowly - I now have fully repaired window woodwork,reputtied glass, and variously 1 -2 initial coats of Holkham linseed oil paint (I'm a converted woman!) & yesterday it took me ages to fix all my fasteners catches etc (theres more to that task than meets the eye I now know) so no more drawing pins and string
My questions are:
1. Burnt Sand Mastic got all the rosin and sand but....... I see no Linseed oil so presumably I need to go buy some. When I have bought said bolied Linseed oil what are the proportions Sand to Rosin blend to Linseed oil ? no instructions on the kegs for us first timers - all hints welcome.

2. On the inside of 2 of my fixed casements I have a gap between the casement and the window frame surround - do you fill this with Burnt sand mastic or linseed oil putty or whats this 'caulking' stuff you all use for?

Where did you buy the burnt sand mastic? The stuff that Womersleys sell comes with a bottle of oil that you have to mix in. I should give Mark Womersly a ring and ask him what proportion to use. 01924 400 651
You need to add just enough oil to create a workable paste that sticks together without there being an excess of oil. Have in mind that the sand grains should be just touching each other with all the spaces in between filled with oil.

Womersleys sell it at 1:4 oil to sand. I over-oiled my first batch, ran out of oil before I'd used all the sand and have cracked mastic to show for it. My second batch was better and hasn't cracked, however the less oil, the tougher it is to apply as it's crumblier.

Womersleys sell it with double boiled linseed which is darker than single boiled. I think it was Mark Womersley who told me that the double boiled oil sets quicker, but can't remember why (something about more oxygen and the word plasticises....).

How very interesting - its Wormersleys I bought it from!! So I'll call today and ask.......wheres the oil then???? Biff I know just what you mean about sand particles seperated by oil and can visualise this but I have taken delivery of two kegs - 1 of rosin Blend and 1 of burnt sand so how much of each of these ingredients to oil - sorry still clueless though now know I should have received oil too - its been a bit complicated this order! so guys please clarify and scuse my 'thickness'

ok Confessions of a dim girl........ Theres me phoning Wormersleys this morning (our 'David' must be sick of the sound of my voice by now) I explain I have 2 kegs of dry matter one labelled sand and one labelled Rosin Blend but...........no oil. David somewhat mystified by this gormlous woman twittering about not getting the linseed oil and could he please send some - politely and calmly explains in broad Yorkshire accent that the bottle(s) of oil are contained within the keg labelled 'rosin blend ' do I feel stupid or what!!!! did I think to actually open this keg and peer inside it for bottles .....nah.

Mind you please can someone tell me the proportions of each ingredient and then I promise I'll go and lie down in a darkened room. Its just 1:4 is a bit misleading when theres 3 ingredients!!

My Womersley deliver was one bucket of sand/rosin mix and a box of bottles of oil. If your sand and rosin are separate, then mix the two together before you start.

Then mix the sand/rosin and oil in 1:4 proportions. To mix, get a small cup or tin that you don't mind sacrificing. Scoop four cups of sand/rosin mix onto a flat surface, make a little dip in the centre, then fill the cup with linseed oil and pour into the sand. Mix.

Now I don't believe you're thick (despite your claims), but just in case, the resulting mixture may look good enough to eat, but I advise against it.

I wouldn't have looked inside for the oil either.

Thankyou both - all is now clear - i will be concoting mastic at the weekend and NO i won't be eating any . Gawd wot a saga I've left a message on Wormerslys ansaphone saying sorry and thankyou for excellent Customer Service and patience (I imagine they're laughing their socks off up north this morning!!)
