Burnt Sand mastic and how to apply it?!

Ok I've got my tin hat on........ Need to apply some small amounts of burnt sand mastic in very thin beads and 'inject it' into the part of the hole in one of my Lintels not filled with Lime Mortar. SO (I can hear you laughing already!) i was thinking..... how to apply it to ensure it gets into the gaps and fills them.without exuding all ove rme and everywhere else I wouldn't wnat it to go... so I thought i know I need an icing bag or dispenser you know with the different sized nozzles! Well I'm now the proud owner of an icing bag as well as a plastic plunger type kit and intend to use it this week. My question is would I be right in saying that I should be aiming for my burnt sand mastic mixture to be about the consistency of preset icing?Like wot you get on your Chrimble Cakes? or should it be ...ahem ......stiffer....... than that? No more jokes please oh pleeeeese.

How big a hole are you trying to fill in?

I use a bucket trowel and a 1/2" or 1/4" tuck pointer for all my sand & oil mastic. I get a big helping of tasty mastic on the trowel, pat it flat and cut slices off with the tuck pointer, slide the slice to the end of the bucket trowel and straight into the gap being filled. The tuck pointer is excellent for smoothing down the mastic and getting a smooth finish. I'm sure the genuine period method is to use a goose feather and a scallop shell, but I like new fangled tools...

Depending on the shape and location of the hole, could you pack it with sand and then dribble the linseed oil into it in-situ?

And if it slopes in such a way that the sand won't stay in, then do you need to fill it at all, since the rain presumably won't stay in either?

many many thanks to both of you (especially for not laughing) all info most welcome i think I can get equipped correctly now - also I hadn't relaised that I didn't need to paint over the mastic with Linseed paints so thanks for that important info.

I have used a gun to apply pointing before http://www.easipoint.co.uk/ and I am sure you could do this for mastic. It was a bit easier for an idiot like me.
