Hi all, I have been lurking for quite some time, Now I have enough work done to start demonstrating to you guys the levels of... buffoonery ( I think that is a good - moderator friendly - word for it) I am finding in my house.
This one might be called a freebie, just for your amusement. I will have quite a few questions/ demonstrations of buffoonery to come - this might ease you in gently!
Basic info: 1850s (ish) semi-detached, 4 floors including basement. Basement is only the front half of the house due to slope down to road.
So, in todays episode of 'What were they thinking?' I give you the boiler installation.
From the outside you can see the new boiler outflow, with (I think) an older one below and an old chimney (?) to the right.
As we have started chipping off cement pointing, I looked at the chimney to realise it was not blocked in any way. It is just a sloping pipe in through the wall.
There was no sign of it on the inside so I thought it was blocked. Nope, looking through it you can see the back of the kitchen cabinets...
We kept the cupboards in one piece while we removed the pipe. On removing the back of the cabinet we have this...
So, to summarise:
Someone took an old boiler/ fire out of the kitchen, leaving a chimney pipe going through the wall without blocking it off.
Someone then came along and built a kitchen in front of it.
And believe me, this isn't the worst of it...
So far I have rebuilt about half the thickness of the wall, and done a first rough lime plaster coat on the inside.
The cupboard still doesn't have a back on it.
To be continued!
