BS3621 Rim Sash Lock or How to secure L&B Door?

Hello All,

Has anyone come accross a BS3621 rated rim sash lock?

We have a relatively old ledged and braced door which has been opened up again, we removed the plaster board and stud wall over it! It's about to get repaired, and painted, so time to think about locks. What I fancy is a plain black rim sash lock, but one that is up to security standard. I just can't find anything.

A 5 lever mortise would be fine, apart from the minor issue of not being able to mortise the door, being planks. I've been toying with how you could surface mount one, and then cover it up with a old rim lock case, but I can see getting the key hole linked up will be a nightmare.

Any ideas?

If this is not the 'final exit' door, then my understanding is that the lock requirements are more relaxed as far as insurance companies are concerned and a couple of large bolts would probably satisfy them.

Might be worth talking to the insurer and asking what their requirements actually are.

No rim locks are to BS3621.

When faced with a smiliar problem I fitted a standard sashlock by creating a wooden cover for it which was screwed to the door below the middle ledge. It looked ok with a simple keyhole cut in and a wooden escutcheon to cover. And a knob for the latch.

Alternatively you could fit a deadlock in the same way, then use a thumb latch (Suffolk latch) for handle and latching.

The cover was routed out from a piece of 1" oak, made about 0.5" bigger than the lockcase all round. The lock ended up half rebated into the case and half rebated in the door plank, if you can picture that.

There is at least one type of "rim lock" that complies with BS3621:2004 but it is expensive.

Often the biggest problem with old doors such as this is that the hinges are weak and the door construction allows it to flex vertically.
A lock or bolt to the lower half of the door is essential IMO.

FlyFisher, You're right it is not the main door, and probably won't be used that much. Plan A is to fit a couple of large bolts anyway. That doesn't stop me thinking up yet more crazy ideas to annoy the wife though. To be honest BS3621 isn't a must, but it is a target.

Andrew, thanks I get the idea. I was thinking of perhaps doing something similar, but with a metal case designed to mimic on an old style rim lock. For preference I wanted that old black rim lock "look", but the wood alternative is interesting. I worry about the strength though.

Lime, Thanks, but I really wanted an old style rim lock look, rather than the cylinder (rim) lock, sorry should have said. I have looked at those high security rim cylinders when I upgraded our main door, and they always have some large hideous carbuncle on the front. No doubt it is a more secure design but having a lump of highly polished fake brass on the outside of the door makes me shudder

I strongly suspect that the weakness of fitting a rim lock means nobody has bothered. I am incubating an idea though. One of my crazy schemes the wife is going to love, when I should be sorting out the damp or similar! I am thinking that with a keep similar to the high security rim cylinder design, fixings on both inside and edge face of the door frame means it would make the grade. Then you could use a flat plate assembly that holds the lock, which could support a large fixing area with multiple screws. The whole lot could then be covered by a flat black box, just like an old school rim lock. Making the box quite large means the plate inside can support more fixings, as well as having space for a "sash" mechanism. Whilst it wouldn't be BS3621 approved, it would be better than anything else I can buy.
