Hello,
Any ideas as to why and what this brown layer is? The wall in the photo is a brick internal wall in a 1900 stone house. This is the kitchen. You see just above half way the wall returns to a more standard lime plaster (its pink due to a residue of either paint or some wall paper, or both!). The lighter yellow and brown is wall paper residue that i have taken a break from removing. The second photo is the other side of the wall (so you can see the lime plaster). There are threads of gypsum from historical repair works. There is some signs of the wall drying out at the bottom - as i removed the wall paper from that spot about a month ago. Any help appreciated. The brown finish runs round the kitchen from headheight to floor. I suspect it was a retrofit attempt to tank it and it maybe trapping moisture, but would like to know before I remove it and re plaster (with lime based). Many thanks
