In the process of refurbishisng my suspended timber floor I managed to split my nice slate fire hearth into 2 pieces. Any advice on how to glue the 2 pieces together. It will be next to our wood stove so temperatures will be quite high.
I had to repair the masonry below to make a firm bed for the repaired stone to sit on, so that it was fully supported.
The front hearth, which I think you're talking about is resting on the joists in my house - is it the same with yours?
Please let us know some more details of the break, and your hearth construction.
I'd not want to rely on just the strength of the repair, I would want to make sure that the hearth is properly supported at the broken section so that there's no danger of it breaking / going through the ceiling or into the floor void with someone standing on it!!!!!
thanks Ian,
The heath is spilt into 2 neat pieces of 2/3 and 1/3. The spilt is vertical and reasonable straight.
My hearth is laying on stone/brick/cob/rubble built upto floor level. It is reasonabley level and supports the hearth at all points. I would be able lay a thin layer of mortar under the hearth so I guess join would be secure vertically.
