Broken gate posts

Hi there

We've got a Victorian terrace with one intact gate post & one thats got the top half missing. I'm looking for a bit of advice on whether I should trawl the reclamation yards looking for a replacement post or if I'd be on a hiding to nothing as I'd never find a replacement. If I couldn't get hold of one, what would people's opinion be on getting a new one made - how long would it take (think its sandstone) for it to look worn? Alternatively would painting both new & old posts be a period property crime?!

Your chances of finding one to match the old one are, frankly, remote. However, you could certainly get a stonemason to make one for you. But why do you want to rush to make it look old? New repair work set among original features is honest, and gives you a satisfying reminder of what you have contributed to the conservation of the property for future generations. In time it will age, but enjoy it while it's new!
