Brighton Pavilion - visits 20th Jan Feb 3rd

Thanks for the posting Nemesis.
I went down to see it today as a Return (or top-up) Visit to my first one (about 3 years ago).
Despite allowing 4 hours, I still ran out of time.
It has been like seeing three completely different angles on the place.
1/Using the guidebook (on my first visit), aided by the information boards in the rooms, really overwhelms with the information on all the objects.
2/The audio guide used today (and free ! ) was very much more of social history than a list of objects. It leaves more time to stand back and take in the overall effect
3/The Conservation "extras" included an introductory talk, followed by a guided tour with the accent on the problems and possibilities in each of the main downstairs rooms.
En-route we had an excellent chat with the lady responsible for recreating the silver wallpaper in the saloon (complete with examples of each stage and a test panel now in-situ).
Afterwards there a display on gilding, faux-marbling/ faux wood and stone replacement... with the gilder on hand for any questions.
I could not have asked for a better day out.
Sadly (probably due to the rain this week) the numbers have not been very high ( I was in a group of 4).
There are still 2 days left (closes Sunday).

Pity it's so far from me - years since I was there and this sounds a really enhanced visit.

The Royal Pavilion Free Day
Sunday 3 February 2008
On Sunday 3 February 2008 admission to the Royal Pavilion, the famous seaside home of King George IV, will be completely free of charge for everyone. The Free Day is a popular annual event celebrating the purchase of the Royal Pavilion by Brighton’s Town Commissioners in 1850.
The Royal Pavilion shop will also be open, offering a wide range of special gifts, books and decorative objects. The Queen Adelaide Tea Rooms will be open as usual for refreshments.
Visitors can learn more about the history of the Royal Pavilion with the audio guide, which can be hired for £2.50 on the day. The guide provides a further opportunity to explore the fascinating past of the building and its residents, from tales of the life of George IV to the Pavilion’s changing architecture and current conservation work.
