A good question - I had to order them and they took an age to make, but I think it proably is a brick they would carry in stock sometimes. Might just be my bad luck that they were out when I ordered.
Whats really noticeable is how soft they are - you can feel the difference in texture when you hold them.
Sorry for the long delay. Actually building the house, work and children plus employer barring access to this web site (!!) are my excuses...
Here are a few pics. Bulmers did two batches for us in the end as we needed more than expected. They fired them twice and picked the ones that got hottest to try to get the really dark purples. Even our bricklayer said they were nice bricks.
Extension is about 40' tall but only about 6' deep - lets hope it doesnt fall over....
Will post pics of plaster work later - over 150sqm has taken its toll on everybody. First ceiling fell off.
Nice bricks. At the risk of turning this into a plug-fest, I had to restore some early 19th century brickwork last week down in Bucks and discovered the very wonderful H.G Matthews brickworks just outside Chesham. Their handmade Chalfont soft red imperials were an exact match for the spalled bricks I was replacing and were a joy to work with, cutting and rubbing wonderfully easily.
And using proper bricks, like Bulmer's and Matthews', just looks so much better than the horrible machine-made hard LBC stuff that every other builder's merchant seems to sell.
