Greetings from sunny Shepperton.
I am extending a Victorian ( approx 1850 ) semi and have some brick matching companies on the case
but would appreciate any advice Forum members might be able able to offer.
Firstly, how do I add my photo`s to this topic ?
The existing bricks are imperial stocks varying in colour from buff to mauve, probably from a local brickworks,
of which there were many in this area. The frog has a capital B indent. Brick size is 235mm x 105 x 63.
By the by, we lived for many years in a Georgian house two miles up the road, rumoured to have been built by the
foreman of the local Catlin brickworks ( probably brought a cartload home at the weekend.... ). Catlin brickworks'
kilns were fired by waste from the Borough of Richmond. While excavating the foundations for this extension we came
across a band of organic matter containing numerous complete jars, vases and bottles many of which were from
the Richmond Bottling Company. It is possible then that the clay for the bricks for our old house was excavated from
here and backfilled with non-combustible waste from Richmond. At least, that`s the sort of connection the Time Team
would make, and it does make an interesting loop.
