Brick & lath & plaster internal walls.

Some of my internal walls are 28mm of lath & plaster, 27mm air gap, and then brick. And I presume the same on the other side, as the wall is about 300mm thick. Is this common, and why would they construct internal walls like this?

Most odd.
Especially when it was already a 9" wall.
Why add an inch air space either side.
Perhaps an attempt at soundproofing?

Does it appear orioginal, as far as one can judge from skirtings, architraves, etc?

Usually because the brickwork was less than straight.

I wondered about that, but if the wall was to be plastered anyway wouldn’t that ‘straighten up’ the wall?
Depends how bad it was I suppose.

It's definitely original. It's the internal wall of the drawing room. I don't think they would have done it for soundproofing, as on the other side is the hallway, and next to that the dining room. Which has internal walls with the same thickness. As do some of the other rooms. So I suspect they are similarly constructed.

Maybe it's a high status thing, rather than the thrown up at speed by navvies that most 19thC houses are?
