Brick Floors

Dear all,

Just ripped up the 30 year old carpet in our new cottage to discover a beautiful Kent brick floor. Its not in bad nick, but needs some spit and polish to bring it back to life.

Question- some minor repointing is required. Would lime mortar be best for this job? If so, any hints as to the right kind? I know there are various consistencies on the market. If it helps, we plan to polish this with beeswax/turpentine mix once the repointing is complete.

Any and all ideas welcome.

Aren't you lucky.

If they were mine I'd carefully wash them first.
Replace any that needed to be replaced set in lime mortar.
I'd point up with lime too.
Then allow to dry before very carefully cleaning excess lime off the bricks with a brick cleaner.
The type of lime is not that important, I'd use that in the builder's merchants.
3:1 fine sand : lime
The mix needs to be as dry as you can get away with.


That is what I would do.
